Big Sean – "Supa Dupa Lemonade"

I saw some people talking about this in the shoutbox and the high quality version just came out so I decided to throw it up. Big Sean definitely sounds nice over this “Lemonade” beat. He’s got the kind of voice and character that shines, but I have a couple reservations about him.

He says a lot of the same stuff that everyone else says. You know, talking about his “retarded” flow, talking about “brain” simultaneously in terms of education and getting your dick sucked, and doing that thing Drake made popular lately by saying a phrase and then finishing it with a one word punchline. Example: “Swimmin’ in the money, come and find me…Nemo”.

Again, he sounds pretty nice doing it, so I’m not complaining. There are always new trends in music and I don’t think there is anything wrong with incorporating what’s hot right now into your music, but that can’t be your only trick. I like to see at least one thing that makes an artist unique in some way, and I haven’t seen that in Big Sean yet. Not saying it’s not there, but I haven’t seen it yet.

Sidenote: I really liked the chorus in Gucci’s version of this song. If he would’ve left that in there this would have made it to my iTunes.

i dont think the chorus came with the instrumental or something about it cant get cleared because everyone who is doing freestyles over this beat isnt using it.

Yeah, the only song I've really heard by Big Sean where he talks about anything other than having a lot of money or being good at rapping is Million Dollars.

I would have to disagree on how he copied the Drake one word punchline like Nemo. Big Sean has been doing that for a while so I wouldn't say he bit that off of him.

Yeah I tried to be careful with my words because I didn't want to make it sound like I thought he was biting. Just saying I think Drake made it really popular lately with "Forever".I'm not even saying it's a bad move. I like that kind of punchline delivery. I'm just saying I can't find anything about him that nobody else is doing. Whether it be lyrics, flow, delivery. I don't know. I'm not writing him off, I think he's got a lot of potential. I just want to see him step out of the norms a little.

yeah I get what you're saying. And I agree that Drake did popularize that, but if you go back and listen to UKNOWBIGSEAN from last May he has been using that style. So one could argue that maybe Drake borrowed that from him.I think what separates him from the others is his really laid back flow, which has lines simple enough to catch and also witty. I think he also has good beat selection and I hate to use the word swag, but he's very confident in his craft.I'm rooting for Big Sean this year.

Yeah I agree with Confusion, he's not doing anything new but I am hopeful and eager to hear where he's gonna go from here.

Yeah Management you know your shit. I'm with you on pretty much everything you said. First of all, the bar code line is great. Definitely the standout line in the song for me.Also, I think you're right about the really laid back flow with simplistic, catchy lines. I think (and hope) that as Big Sean establishes himself more, that flow will become a little more emphasized and he'll be instantly recognizable for that.

Big props for putting this song up. But I do want to set the record straight about Big Sean's particular flow style. As you can see from IBN Jasper's blog here:http://ferrarimurakami.blogspot.com/2010/01/big-sean-supa-dupa-lemonade-freestyle.htmlBig Sean has been doing this particular 1 punch flow since 2008. So yeah.. give credit, where credit's due, that's all. Big ups to this blog and your writing. Lenewshit.com
