Monsters Of Folk – "Dear God (Sincerely MOF)" & "Baby Boomer"

I finally got around to listening through the supergroup Monsters Of Folk‘s self titled album. The album is good; some people will probably even say great, but they’re probably confusing the word “great” with “done by great artists”. If it wasn’t for the constant shifting of the voices heard taking control of songs, much of this album would run together in a stream of country influenced rootsy Americana songs.

The positive way to look at it is that you’ve got good songs sung by some of your favorite voices. The negative is that with all these great artists coming together, you might have expected some huge, eclectic, experimental, monster of an album with swirling flavors and unexpected moments of greatness. The first song on this album, “Dear God (Sincerely MOF)”, provides a disappointingly false idea of where this album is going to go so here’s your warning; Don’t get too excited. If you go in with that mindset, it would be hard not to enjoy throwing this album on while sitting around a campfire or cooking up bacon eggs on a Saturday morning.

New! T-Pain – "More Careful" (Apology To Jay-Z)

Going in over Drake’s successful, T-Pain sends out an apology to Jay-Z. If you didn’t hear, he was spotted by Fab at a show talking shit on Jay-Z. Pretty much everyone concluded it was because of Hov’s “Death Of Autotune”. Since then, there’s been a lot of effort to clear up the meaning and motivation behind the words. Here’s T-Pain’s explanation. At times, it sounds like he’s being pretty real on here. But then you think about his big ass chain, and stop caring about who is fucking with T-Pain’s money. Thanks to RR.

T-Pain – More Careful | ZShare

Alright, so let’s talk about this Jay shit
Somedays I wish that I ain’t never say shit

And Diddy said, ain’t no excuse for what I did

But I felt like he was knocking the same shit that feeds my kids

I do music cause I need it to make my world spin
So when you down it, it’s like you dissin’ my girlfriend

And Jay one of the only niggas I hear bringin’ it

So I didn’t think that he would even entertain the shit

Cause entertainment is see through

But if you really feel like I’m dead, then nigga me too

I ain’t tryna write you’re rhymes

But you coulda skipped one DJ and all you had to say was ‘T-Pain, we cool’

But by all means don’t take this as a diss or hatin’
I just wanna explain my side of the situation
So if you knew just how much respect that I had
You’d know that I’m a real nigga when I say, my bad.

My Proposition To You

Pigeons and Planes
has been doing awesome lately. Thank you to everyone who has been spreading the word, linking me up, etc. I really appreciate it, and if anyone ever needs anything from me, email me, twitter me, whatever. I’m always down to help people out. But it all had me thinking. What could I do to get the word out about Pigeons and Planes? I thought of some really good, effective, conventional methods. Then I thought of one very ineffective and possibly illegal one. Let’s go with that. I love guerrilla marketing.

So here’s my proposition: You go out and write www.PigeonsAndPlanes.com in a publicly visible place. I would never tell you to do something illegal. Be creative. Hang up a poster if that’s your thing, write it on a dirty car window… If nothing else, whoever cleans that window will think, “What the fuck is this?” Just do it in a place where people will see it. Send me a picture. In return, I will send you a hand written, personal thank you letter, and a Mix CD. Let me know what kind of music you like if you want it to be personalized. I know, it’s not much, but it’s fun, and it will be cool.

Little Dragon – "Blinking Pigs"

I had never heard this group, but here’s what got me enticed:

1) The band’s name is Little Dragon.

2) The song’s name is “Blinking Pigs”.

3) The album’s name is Machine Dreams. (Out 10/20)

Before I had even pressed ‘play’ my imagination was swimming in an ocean of possibility. But that was probably just part of this 3 week acid trip I’ve been trying to maintain. Just kidding. It was probably a combo of the choice names and the acid.

Anyways, I drink a lot of wine based on the label, and I listen to a lot of music based on the name. As you can imagine, I deal with a lot of disappointment. This one was a pleasant surprise. The electro quartet pulls through with a sparsely synthed-out pop hit filled with catchy/trippy vocals, snapping drums and weird effects here and there. A lot going on in this song, but it never sounds too busy. Glad I checked this one out. Saw it at Stereogum.
