Video! Justin Taylor ft Ratatat – "Why Can’t I Fly"

Justin Taylor – Why Can’t I Fly? from Spencer Tuckerman on Vimeo.

Here’s a video for Justin Taylor‘s “Why Can’t I Fly, done by Spencer Tuckerman. I’ve heard a few tracks from Justin Taylor, and I still can’t quite put my finger on him. These days, you hear/see an artist and half the time you can probably sum up the musician in a couple of sentences. Not Justin. Justin Taylor is part rapper, part singer, a little bit of pop, a little bit of rock, and he’s only 18 years old with a head full of potential.

How Christina Aguilera Won the Support of Hipster Blogs Everywhere

A funny thing happened today. I don’t know if you’re aware (if you are, you should spend less time on the internetz) but there have been these mysterious videos going around. They feature some electronic-like music, weird nature images, and some slimy, disguised female. They have been called “IamwhoamI”. Example above. Immediately speculators rambled off suspects ranging from MGMT to Trent Reznor. Every indie-electro act in between was mentioned at some point by an excitable blogger somewhere in middle America simultaneously posting music and masterbating to the sounds of the new (possibly fake) Justice single.

These emails have been sent out with no information, and cryptic number sequences just begging to be deciphered. Hopefully nobody here cares about number codes, but for you supernerds, it looked something like this…

699130082.45132

Supposedly you add up all the digits before the decimal and after and find the corresponding letter in the alphabet and it comes out to be 38.17 or CH.AG. (Thanks to PS for this)

Anyways, after putting together all the pieces today the internet had a collective epiphany, and it seems pretty clear that the culprit is Christina Aguilera. The smell of disappointment, embarassment, and shame is pungent tonight among hip alt-bloggers. Christina Aguilera may not have big issues selling lots of albums, but how else could she build hype among hipster bloggers who only love AnCo and Vamp Wknd? Pretty smart marketing.

Video! Weirdest Acceptance Speech Ever

Fever Ray, the solo project of The Knife’s Karin Dreijer Andersson receives the prize for the year’s best dance artist at P3 Gold in Gothenburg. In this video, she proves that Lady Gaga isn’t the only pop star who can do weird shit at award shows. I’m not sure what the point is, but I like it. I’d rather see this than see some glammed up celeb thanking a bunch of people that I don’t know.

Corinne Stevie – "Cristal On The Moon"

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Corinne Stevie before, but I saw this over at iLLRoots and this picture got me interested. I have a thing for knives, and I too like to aggressively teeth them for photo ops.

Like the title suggests, this song is a blend of urban and lunar. The beat on this one is deep, and the sound is so spacey that you might actually be able to convince your really gullible friend that this was recorded in a moon simulator studio. Corinne is working on a mixtape and her album Amalgram is set to drop this summer.

Purple Monkey Sircus – "Blue Moo Cookie Dough"

New music from PMS! Purple Monkey Sircus is a young up and coming trio that (despite the name) can’t fail in my mind. These guys just have a style that I agree with. Ever since I heard the Passion Pit sampled “Fuck My Life” it clicked with me.

When I’ve posted them in the past, I heard a lot of Chiddy Bang comparisons, and it makes sense. They both come with that brightly colored glow in the dark hip-hop that isn’t afraid to do things differently and they’re both up on their indie rock. Chiddy Bang’s production is a little more beefed up and polished, but I think what PMS lacks in production and mastering they make up for with character and a subtle charisma that comes across in every word. I hope they prove me right, because I’m expecting great things from Purple Monkey Sircus in the future.

The Middle East – "Blood and "The Darkest Side"

I love acoustic music, but due to my raging anxiety, explosive thirst for all things caffeinated, and general desire for instant satisfaction, my recent music taste has been dominated by loud noises and quickly moving beats. So when I got this email about the Australian band called The Middle East, I thought “Good, Aussies seem to be an excitable bunch.” Lightning bolts and infernos filled up little thought clouds above my head.

Those little thought clouds quickly dispersed when I pressed play. The Middle East’s sound is filled with acoustic guitars and a voice barely breaking out of a whisper. But the thing is, I never wanted to press “stop”. Check them out, these guys will be at Coachella.

Gleemix

I’ve been hearing about this for a while now. I have no idea what to expect out of this, but word on the net is that it’s pretty crazy. The idea of taking something that was made to be extremely accessible and twisting it to new extremes is really appealing to me. I’m about to check it out.

What is Gleemix? Well, it’s an experiment of sorts. One that incorporates the wildly popular and award-winning show, Glee, with the production talents of Sickboy, a Washington, DC based producer. What’s fascinating is not just the content of this EP, but also the context. Think about it, these are remixes of songs that were remade for a TV show! Sounds pretty interesting, right?

It is. Gleemix takes six songs from the Glee Soundtrack, and transforms them into an unexpected, gratifying experience. Ranging from Hip Hop to Techno, Dubstep to House, fast to slow, dark to light, Gleemix has something for everyone. Sickboy uses everything from the tiniest shard of sound, to large musical phrases, and combines it with his own skills to create something that is not just new, but also extraordinary. That is Gleemix.
