Classic! Muse – "New Born"

Just to keep things from getting predictable around here, I wanted to drop a classic. I’m going to see Muse in March so I’m brushing up on some of my favorites, and this is definitely one of them. Muse has an epic, planet consuming sound that can make volcanoes erupt and stadiums implode. This one is off of Origin Of Symmetry, the first Muse album I ever got my hands on. I had heard a couple hits of theirs but I didn’t have any real expectations. I tentatively slid the disc in my Jeep on the way home from the local record shop in VA. “New Born” is the first song on the album. When the song got to the 1:25 mark, I was officially a fan of Muse, and I have been ever since.

Muse – "Crying Shame"

Despite what your friend (the one that puts 5 ultra-rare Sonic Youth recordings on every mix) tells you, b-sides and unreleased songs are usually unreleased for a reason. But with every “usually” comes exceptions. Check out this track from Muse, recorded a few years ago and performed live, but still not appearing on any albums. Epic chorus, swelling build-up, and guitar riffs that make me wanna chug whatever drink I have in my hand and break the glass over my face. If this was on the new Muse album, it would be my favorite track on the album.

Music Video! Muse – "The Resistance"

Here’s the latest video from Muse. The video concept is pretty straight-forward: Capture the live Muse experience. It may be simple if you’re a garage band from Blanche, Idaho, but Muse’s live shows are famously massive in scope, sound, and feeling. Which is what you’d expect from a band whose sound can best be described as an epic end-of-the-world reaction.

By the way, I only speak about the Muse concert experience from what I’ve heard and what I’ve read. I’ll let you know if it lives up to my expectations in March.

Muse Fools Italian TV Show

So Muse was asked to lip synch for an Italian TV show. They did, but put their lead singer Matt behind the drum set and the drummer stood in as the lead singer. Pretty funny. In the interview at the end you can hear the drummer Dominic referring to “our drummer Matt”. I wonder how many people in the audience picked up on what just happened.

Music Video! Muse – "Uprising"

This video gets absolutely absurd when giant teddy bears rise from the dirt, make angry faces, and proceed to smash buildings and knock over bridges.

New! Muse – Unnatural Selection

Another new Muse song from the upcoming The Resistance. New Muse sounds more like old Muse on this track. Straight epic, grandoise rock that you’d expect from a band that loves singing about the end of the world. Lots of high flying electric guitars, layered voices straining to make the most dramatic chorus possible, and a song that rocks hard for 7 minutes. If you’re more into indie rockstars trying desperately hard to keep it cool and show no emotion, this isn’t for you.

New! Muse – Undisclosed Desires

Here’s another leak from Muse’s upcoming The Resistance courtesy of WAWSTSF. There are things about this song that I really like, and things about it that don’t do anything from me. One thing that I’ve noticed is that the sound gets more and more heavily produced and less organic and raw. It makes sense, since Muse has such a huge, electronic, epic sound, but it takes away from those really hard breaking points that Muse songs used to have. No judgments yet, just observations. I look forward to hearing more from Muse.
