New! Frank Ramz – "Brief Intermission" (Prod. Woody)

Oh shit.

New Frank Ramz from his upcoming EP Frankly Speaking. Ramz is officially in beast mode. This production by Woody is rock solid, and Ramz crumbles it. And this is called the intermission? I can’t wait to hear this whole EP. Stay tuned.

Video! Vampire Weekend Live Acoustic Set in France

La Blogotheque has captured a great acoustic set by Vampire Weekend that takes place in France. I can’t tell you much background information, because I don’t speak French, but it’s both intimate and energetic – a great set – and the French seem to be really into it. The full set is 23 minutes, and features new stuff, old stuff, and a cover. Who knew Ezra could speak French so well?

Contra has been out for a little while now. Any thoughts? It seems like it had a polarizing effect among fans. Vampire Weekend has been really successful at branding themselves, and I think this is part of the reason that some scrooges are getting upset. It’s always a little disheartening to see your favorite indie band become a brand, but it’s also part of the music business, and as long as the music is good, I’m okay with it. The music industry faces the large task of balancing art and product, and everyone has their own idea of what “selling out” is. That being said, I enjoy Contra, and I’m still a Vampire Weekend fan.

Thanks to La Blogotheque and Will

DOOM – "Gazzillion Ear" (Babe Rainbow Remix)

Babe Rainbow is a Vancouver based producer who creates heavy atmospheric beats that you’d expect to hear in a movie as a camera pans out from an underground city of enslaved beasts. You know, those kind of beats.

Here is his new remix of DOOM’s “Gazzillion Ear”. I still haven’t decided whether it’s absolutely amazing, complete garbage, or somewhere in between. I love the idea of it, and I love the sound of the beat, but I don’t think it works perfectly with DOOM’s delivery. DOOM’s reference-filled, wordy flow is hard to remix because it hugs every turn of the beat. The timing of this newly fitted musical backdrop sounds off to me, and I’m not sure if these heavy, atmospheric beats are really the right choice for an artist like DOOM. I get drawn into this deep, dark world and then DOOM snaps me out of it with a reference about Jake the Snake.

What do you think?

Massive Attack-Splitting the Atom-directed by Edouard Salier from edouard salier on Vimeo.

Massive Attack wins again. This video for “Splitting the Atom” starts a little slow, but by the 1:30 mark things quickly turn colossal. Heligoland comes out 2/08.
