Curren$y – "Smash On O’Leary"

Here’s a new one from Spitta off the Smokee Robinson project, out on Superbowl Sunday. He’s hit-or-miss for me, but this one works and the beat provides the perfect backdrop for Curren$y’s flow.

It’s funny because Curren$y always seems to be hanging out with up and comers, and I think a lot of people associate him with a new class of emcees like Wiz Khalifa and Jay Electronica. Well, he may be an up and comer, but he’s been one for over a decade now. Curren$y was an “up and comer” when he was with No Limit (remember them?) as a teen. After that ended, we was an “up and comer” with Young Money. I’m not taking shots, the dude brings some good stuff to the table and has obviously put in a lot of work, but he’s had a lot of time and opportunity to establish himself, and he hasn’t really done that yet. He’s a busy guy, and we’ll see if he really proves himself in 2010.

I think joining and leaving Young Money set him back a lot. Not musically, but with getting recognition.

Nothing is wrong with that at all. Being part of the new class is a good thing.

I have a feeling that he would be putting out much worse shit if he had stayed with YM.

Homie makes honest and quality music. Dropd 8 mixtapes in a year a a half span. Most rappers dont put in that kinda work in 4 years let alone tell the truth when they rap. Then a album and album/mixtape. Now he's got JETS collaborations with diamond supply co. Fo is grindn hard if you dont see that you jus blind. Look it up.
